Scope note
Covered carts, huts, or tents, mounted on wheels by which they can be rolled into shallow water at the seaside or lake shore, for the purpose of allowing swimmers to enter the water modestly, without appearing in public in bathing suits. May be horse-driven or pushed by hand. Bathing machines were popular in 18th-19th-century Europe.
